All-IP is THE buzzword in all business digitalization. The switch from analog and ISDN connections to SIP telephony plays a significant role in this process: SIP trunks enable telephony via the Internet – the telephony of the future.
But what exactly is a SIP trunk? How does SIP trunking work? What are the advantages and what requirements must be met? We clarify.

1. What is a SIP trunk?
A SIP trunk refers to a telephone connection based on a broadband Internet line. Several telephone lines are bundled together. SIP trunks are used in VoIP telephony and enable parallel telephone calls to be made via the Internet. The establishment and termination of voice connections is controlled via the Session Initiation Protocol – SIP for short. This protocol is the recognized IETF standard for IP communication. The term trunk stands for the channel that connects the telephone system with the provider. A physical connection is no longer required for the SIP trunk to the telephony provider.
2. How does SIP trunking work?
With SIP trunking, an IP connection is established between the customer’s telephony or unified communications system and a telecommunications network operator that provides SIP trunking via a Session Border Controller (SBC). This trunk is used to establish and operate voice, data, and video connections via point-to-point or point-to-multipoint connections. The following figure illustrates how the SIP trunk works:
The customer’s telephone system – PBX – is connected to the telecommunications provider’s Next Generation Network (NGN) via the Internet. TENIOS uses two geo-redundant data centers to ensure a stable connection. The transmission takes place via Voice-over-IP (VoIP).
3. What are the advantages of SIP trunking?
#1 Lower monthly connection charges
First and foremost are cost savings in providing and operating as well as per-minute fees. The costs for line-based analog or ISDN connections / PMX connections are completely eliminated. For companies with multiple locations, telephone systems can also be centralized and connected via a uniform PBX/UC solution. Overall, the cost savings of switching to All-IP are up to 50%.
#2 High flexibility
Another significant advantage is the flexibility of SIP trunking. SIP enables seamless integration of unified communication and voice applications into the corporate IT landscape. Standardization via SIP allows existing PBX and UC systems to be integrated more flexibly into the all-IP systems.
#3 Easy scalability
As call volumes grow, SIP trunks can add new phone numbers or locations in no time at all. Classic telephone systems, in contrast, support adding more trunks only after an additional hardware upgrade is required, which is costly and time-consuming to install.
#4 Voice channels according to your needs
Instead of being forced to select 2 or even 30 lines as required when using ISDN/T1, SIP trunking allows you to decide on the exact number of channels you actually need. Expensive overcapacities can be avoided.
#5 Elimination of VoIP gateways
VoIP gateways that may be additionally required for IP telephony are no longer necessary. All calls are IP-based. In many cases, call quality is also improved, as there is no longer any need to convert analog and digital lines.
#6 Use of modern IP telephone systems
Current IP PBX systems or unified communications solutions promote productivity, mobility and revenue. They are significantly easier to connect to SIP trunks than to the classic telephone network.
4. Requirements for the use of SIP trunking
As the SIP trunk is based on telephony via the Internet, a SIP-enabled telephone system and a broadband Internet connection are required for use. The bandwidth should be about 100 kbit/s per voice channel to ensure a reliable connection in good quality.
If the telephone system used is not SIP-enabled, in most cases the PBX can be connected to the Internet using a media gateway.
